Chapter Twelve

“Where and when?” Evie looked into Charley’s slate-blue eyes and felt a twinge of desire.

Charley smiled as if she could tell what Evie was feeling. “Tonight.”

“Where?” Evie turned to walk away and Charley pulled her back.

“You’ll like it,” she whispered in Evie’s ear, and the hair stood up on Evie’s neck. “Go pack your suitcase.”

“How long will we be gone?”

“Cram as many shorts and T-shirts and undies as you can into your suitcase. Oh, and don’t forget a swimsuit and shampoo and suntan lotion and sandals and your Kindle.”

So, there would be electricity. She scrounged around in the bag of clothes she had brought from her house and made a wrinkled pile on the bed. She thought she should wash and iron them, but Charley said there wasn’t time.

“We’re going to eat dinner, clean up the dishes and leave as soon as it’s dark. Wear an old pair of jeans, a long-sleeve shirt, tennis shoes and a light jacket, sweatshirt or both.”

Evie questioned her but got no answers. She went to the kitchen, wishing they hadn’t eaten the leftovers. “We’ll just have lunch, since we already ate dinner,” she said aloud to herself. She made grilled cheese sandwiches, which they ate while listening to All Things Considered.

Charley swallowed the last of her sandwich. “I’ll put the bags in the car.” She went down the hall to the guest room where Evie kept her clothes. Both were dressed in jeans. Evie wore her long-sleeve Wisconsin shirt and white tennis shoes. She was taking the zip-up Wisconsin sweatshirt and the light jacket that hung on the back of her chair. She cleaned the dishes and turned off the radio. She hadn’t been able to concentrate on the news anyway. She was so excited.

Charley came in from the garage. “What do you have in that bag? It’s so heavy.”

The phone rang, startling Evie.

“Don’t answer,” Charley said. “Time for one last tinkle. Then we leave.”

When Evie reached for the light switch before they went out the door, Charley grabbed her hand. “Leave it on.” Then she turned on the TV and a couple of lamps in the den.

Charley backed the Jeep out of the garage, shutting the overhead door. She switched on the headlights when they reached the corner.

When they turned onto College Avenue, Evie asked, “Are we going to the airport?”

“Sort of,” Charley said, checking the mirrors constantly.

“Are we being followed?” Evie asked, beginning to look around, her heart picking up speed.

“Don’t think so.”

Charley turned into the area with the private planes instead of the international airport. “Be ready to grab your bag and follow me.”

This is like a movie, Evie thought, as she jumped out of the Jeep, grabbed her bag and hurried after Charley.

They climbed the portable steps and ducked into a small, sleek jet. A tall, broad-shouldered man with thick brown hair stood just inside. “Welcome,” he said and pulled the door shut after them, while outside another man wheeled away the steps.
